Charles Hubbard, the 65-yr old incumbent who had planned to retire from politics before this snap election was called, managed to hold this riding with a 2800 vote difference. The result was more or less predictable and was definitely the safe vote for the constituents here.
Mike Morrision (CON) ran a, relatively, close second but not anywhere near threatening Hubbard and while the Conservatives spent the majority of their time here fighting the Liberals, the truth is that the NDP candidate (Jeanette Manuel-Allain), a first time candidate, took alot of votes away from Morrison which inevitably sealed his fate.
The early concern was that Independent candidate, Danny Gay, a former provincial Liberal MLA would split the vote between him and Hubbard but he proved to be of little concern in the end for the Liberals. His 1600+ votes and the NDP with approx. 6000 votes changed the complexion of this riding somewhat possibly becoming the people's strategic vote to prevent the Conservatives from being elected.
Back to the drawing board for Morrison and the Conservatives here in Northeastern New Brunswick. The Liberals will hopefully start looking for a replacement for Hubbard as this term will/should be his last and the NDP candidate had a very respectable showing and I think we'll be seeing more of her in the future.
This riding is still not of interest to any Government, Provincial and/or Federal, but it is what is. Who knows what will happen with the gun registry and our single largest industry, forestry (Pulp & Paper). Both of these aren't exactly shining beacons of success these days so it will be an increasingly volatile area, as will most of Northern New Brunswick be, in the forseeable future.
